Mal started his career at Cadbury Schweppes in Dunedin and Auckland after he graduated with a Commerce Degree majoring in Management and Marketing and an Arts Degree in Economics. At Cadbury Mal moved through a number of sales roles into marketing where he was Marketing Manager for Cadbury’s flagship block chocolate range.
Deciding it was time to do the ‘OE’, Mal traveled to the United Kingdom where he secured the role of Marketing Manager at the Coca-Cola Company. At Coca-Cola, Mal was responsible for Diet Coke, the second largest selling soft drink in the Coca-Cola portfolio and the rapidly growing water brands category, including Perrier.
After his time in the UK, Mal returned ‘down under’ and changed career paths away from marketing and into retail with Shell in New Zealand and then in Shell Australia. A dynamic career in various senior merchandise roles at Shell included launching Flybuys, designing and upgrading major Shell sites, being Project Manager for Shell’s 50% share of Burger King NZ (Hungry Jack’s). In addition, Mal was responsible for the Trading Terms relationships with Suppliers, developing store layouts and managing the key categories for Shell’s franchise stores. He was also involved in several global teams for Shell. Mal was also heavily involved in global Shell teams. He also works closely with the pharmacy industry, including three years as Merchandise and Marketing Manager at Mayne.
As a consultant, Mal works with C-Stores in the USA and Europe, Supermarkets in Australia and Thailand, very closely with Australian, Liquor, Golf and Pharmacies. Mal also works with suppliers such as Shell Australia, CUB and Tyrells wines. All of the Australian clients have all felt and continue to feel, the brunt of Woolworths and Coles (or Bunnings now perhaps!).
Away from work, Mal enjoys traveling (luckily), swimming, rowing, rugby, fishing and spending time with his family. He is also a Director of a small Australian chocolate manufacturer which so far has avoided trading with Woolworths and Coles!
