Ray Scicluna
Ray has two simple messages: "all things are possible", and ”you control your choices”
Ray grew up in the rough and tumble world of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. At 17 he decided to open a panel beating shop and mortgage his parent’s home all before moving into the video industry at 21. During this period Ray helped revolutionise the video rental industry and opened the largest video wholesale supermarket in Australia. This superstore set a new standard to be followed for years to come, and secured Ray a number of industry awards. Ray diversified into many other businesses but his main focus was franchising and by 27 he had turned over more than AUD$90m (and couldn’t read or write). Ray has since continued his entrepreneurial career and keeps on opening new businesses.
Ray is the son of a Boiler Maker, who grew up in the rough and tumble world of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. Leaving school at the age of 13 and not being able to read or write certainly had its challenges. After buying his second business and using his interpersonal skills, he achieved rewards beyond his wildest dreams. During this period Ray helped revolutionise the video rental industry and opened the largest video wholesale supermarket in Australia. This superstore set a new standard to be followed for years to come, and secured Ray a number of industry awards. Ray diversified into many other businesses but his main focus was franchising and by 27 he had turned over more than 90 million dollars (and couldn’t read or write) - was married, had 2 lovely kids, a lovely home, a great business, lots of money but no balance.
Declared bankrupt (which is a colourful story in itself) at 29, Ray lost everything…six million dollars was bad enough, but he also lost his home, his brother’s home and worst of all, his parents home. The pressure was too much and his marriage failed soon after. To this day Ray remembers his father’s words of confidence, “Hell son, you had nothing to start with, therefore you must be richer than when you began, you did it before so I’m sure you can do it again, you are still a young man”. Ray never lost sight of his dreams. He moved on to own the franchise Video Ezy and a number of other successful and not so successful businesses.
Ray quickly moved to rebuild: a career for himself, a livelihood for his family and most important of all, a more balanced family life. Crucial to his plan was educating himself and documenting all of his experiences. Ray formed an inspired team capable of producing retail training programs and organising large conferences both domestic and international. He has had more than his share of challenges yet he has never lost sight of his dreams. People are often amazed at his clear vision and steadfast march towards his goals.
Ray talks about ‘Lots of Stuff’, the stuff that dreams are made of, the stuff we’ve done, the stuff we’re doing and the stuff that we all wish we could forget!! “The best things in ‘Life’ are not things”. Ray teaches the importance of controlling ones attitude, projecting confidence and self-esteem by applying mental focus.
We all have choices in life and when things look bad it’s your choice to look at them in a better light. Ray shows you HOW!. It’s up to you to realise what is truly valuable in your life. Ray’s message is simple….”you control your choices”
