Mike joined Saatchi & Saatchi in 1997 as an executive Director and resigned to pursue his passions. Mike is passionate about innovation and creativity, and his life is a living example of that.
Mike Hutcheson grew up in towns all over, went to nine schools, from Wanganui to Oamaru, but mostly in Nelson. Having gained entry into the Ilam School of Fine Arts he obtained a Diploma of Fine Arts preliminary, took a sharp right turn and, for obscure reasons, studied Law at Canterbury and Victoria Universities. He didn’t manage to finish a Law degree but has taken the scenic route through life ever since.
Having discovered advertising by accident Mike went on to win the Reader's Digest Scholarship as New Zealand's Most Outstanding Young Advertising Man. Mike has had a varied career, which has seen him run a family building company, set up Replica Homes, a franchise building chain throughout New Zealand, work on the team that established the first Lifecare Retirement Village in New Zealand and his own real estate company. He has worked on commission or profit share for enough years to know the value of advertising that works! Mike is co-founder of a number of leading advertising agencies in New Zealand, including Colenso, Hutcheson, Knowles Marinkovich and Marcoa Direct founded in 1991 and sold to Colenso in 1994. He also spent three years with TV and film production house Communicado. Mike joined Saatchi and Saatchi five years ago as Executive Director, then Managing Director. He now runs The Hive, a Saatchi and Saatchi Think Tank.
Mike has been part of teams that have produced many of New Zealand's memorable campaigns. He contributes a regular humour column for The Independent and in 2000 published a collection of these in book form, entitled “No1 Best Seller”. Since then he has published two other books: ‘Beethoven’s Banker’ and ‘Kickstart Your Creativity’ co-authored with psychologist Rebecca Webster.
His other Directorships and involvements have included EnglishToGo Ltd; Project K Management Board; Auckland Festival 2003 Committee; Spirit of Adventure Trust; Graeme Bringan’s Property Education Trust’ AUT Communication Studies Advisory Committee and AUT Chancellor’s Forum. Mike is an entertaining and insightful writer, speaker, motivator and facilitator with a strong focus on creativity and innovation.
